Healthy riparian areas (the habitat adjacent to a stream) provide controlled release of water into our streams. This reduces the potential of flooding. The filtration of the water as it seeps through the humus and soil of a healthy riparian area reduces the amount of pollutants entering the streams. Wetlands are especially good at removing toxic pollutants as Cattails and many other marsh plants absorb these substances, removing them from the water.

Watersheds with good riparian corridors (30 to 50 meters or more) provide habitat for wildlife and help protect the biodiversity (the variety of plants, animals, birds and other organisms). Healthy streams and riparian areas provide us with a place to recreate (walking, cycling, nature study), to get away from the stresses of everyday life.
